A Faith Built on Evidence
Faith is the driving force behind everything a Christian does. Scripture defines it clearly: “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1), and “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). Biblical faith is not blind—it is grounded in credible evidence, reasonable trust, and God’s revealed truth.
We practice this kind of faith every day. We trust reliable testimony and observable evidence in areas of life we have not personally experienced. In the same way, the complexity and design of the world point unmistakably to a Creator. Just as a building requires a designer and builder, so the universe reflects the work of an all-powerful God who spoke it into existence.
Evidence in the Life of Christ
The life of Jesus provides undeniable proof of who He is. His miracles were not hidden or imagined—they were public, verifiable, and accepted even by His enemies. When Lazarus was raised from the dead, opponents of Jesus did not deny the miracle; instead, they sought to silence the evidence. When Peter and John healed a man lame from birth, even the ruling council admitted a “notable miracle” had occurred (Acts 4).
The apostles spoke with certainty because they had witnessed the truth firsthand. Like Peter, who declared, “to whom shall we go?” (John 6:68), they understood there was no alternative to Christ. Luke, a careful historian, investigated eyewitness accounts so that others could know the certainty of these things (Luke 1:1–4). Even Thomas, often labeled as doubting, was simply seeking evidence—and when he saw the risen Lord, he boldly confessed, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28).
A Faith That Must Be Personal
Faith cannot be inherited; it must be developed. Timothy benefited from the teaching of his mother and grandmother, but eventually he had to make their faith his own (2 Timothy 1:5). Each believer must come to personal conviction through study, reflection, and obedience to God’s word.
True faith grows when we engage Scripture personally and apply it honestly. It is strengthened through both careful study and real-life experience, as we learn that God’s way is always best.
Evidence in the Bible Itself
The Bible stands as a powerful testimony to its divine origin. Its historical accuracy, unity across centuries, and harmony among its many writers provide compelling evidence. Its scientific foreknowledge—seen in areas like health practices, geography, and the natural world—further demonstrates that it is not merely a human book.
From the precision of Luke’s historical details in Acts to the consistent message developed over more than 1,500 years, Scripture reveals itself as a unified and trustworthy revelation from God.
